The moving truck pulls away and there’s a strange quiet. The boxes are inside, the house is yours, and then it hits you: you have no idea who to call about the power bill, where the DMV is, or which grocery store is the good one.
I’ve helped a lot of families land here from the Bay Area, Sacramento, Southern California, and out of state. The house part they’ve usually got handled. It’s everything in the two weeks after closing that catches people sideways.
So here’s the checklist I give my relocation clients — the practical stuff, in roughly the order it matters.
Your driver’s license clock started before you unpacked
This is the one that surprises people most, so I’m putting it first.
California gives new residents 10 days to apply for a California driver’s license once you’ve established residency (California Vehicle Code §12505). And residency isn’t some vague feeling — it starts the moment you rent or buy a home here, take a job here, enroll a child in a California public school, or register to vote.
So if you closed on a house on the first of the month, that clock started on the first. Not when you finished unpacking.
Make an appointment online rather than walking in. The Redding DMV field office handles a wide area, and appointment slots can book out. Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two documents proving California residency — your closing paperwork or a signed lease works for one, a utility bill for the other.
If you’re already a California resident who just moved within the state, you still need to update your address with the DMV within 10 days. That one’s free and takes about two minutes online.
Vehicle registration: 20 days, and it’s a separate deadline
Different rule, different clock. New residents have 20 days to register an out-of-state vehicle (California Vehicle Code §6700).
Don’t let the 20-day number lull you — the license deadline is shorter, and they run at the same time. Handle both in one DMV trip if you can.
Budget for this honestly. Registering an out-of-state car in California typically means a smog certification, a VIN verification, registration fees, and a use tax if you bought the vehicle recently. It is routinely more expensive than people expect. If you’re moving two cars, it adds up fast.
Utilities: the answer depends on your exact address
This trips up almost everyone, because Shasta County isn’t served by one single provider.
If you’re inside Redding city limits, the City of Redding runs its own electric utility — Redding Electric Utility, or REU. That’s genuinely unusual, and it’s part of why power here has historically been cheaper than in a lot of California. City addresses also typically get water, sewer, and garbage service through the City.
If you’re outside city limits, much of the surrounding county is PG&E territory, and your water and sewer may be a private well and septic system rather than a utility at all.
Don’t guess. Before closing, confirm exactly which providers serve your specific address, and get the accounts transferred into your name effective on your closing date. There’s nothing quite like arriving at your new house in a Redding August to discover the power is off.
A note for anyone coming from a rural property: if you’re on well and septic, you are now the utility. Find out where the septic tank is, when it was last pumped, and where the well head and pressure tank live. Write it down before you forget.
Schools: figure out your district, not just your city
Shasta County doesn’t have one unified school district. Redding alone is served by several — separate elementary districts feeding into a shared high school district — and the boundaries don’t line up neatly with neighborhoods or zip codes.
Two practical points:
Confirm the district before you buy, not after. Two houses on the same street can occasionally sit in different attendance areas. If schools matter to your decision, verify the assignment for the specific address.
Registration paperwork takes longer than you think. Immunization records, proof of residency, and transcripts from the previous district all have to line up. Start it the week you get keys, not the week before school.
The practical geography nobody tells you
A few things that took me no time to learn growing up here and take newcomers about six months:
The river splits your mental map. The Sacramento River runs right through town, and where you live relative to it shapes your daily routine more than mileage does.
“Twenty minutes” means something different here. Coming from a metro area, you’ll find your commute got dramatically shorter. Most cross-town trips in Redding are 10 to 20 minutes. People do drive to Anderson, Palo Cedro, or Cottonwood for work without thinking twice.
Summer is the real adjustment. Redding gets genuinely hot from June through September. Locals shift outdoor activity to early morning and evening, and the river and the lakes stop being scenery and start being infrastructure.
Get a Whiskeytown pass early. If you’re going to be out there more than a few times a year, the annual pass pays for itself quickly, and Whiskeytown is one of the best things about living here.
Your first weekend: go be a local
Practical advice, but I mean it. The families who settle in fastest are the ones who go do something in the first two weeks instead of unpacking every box first.
Walk the Sacramento River Trail. Cross the Sundial Bridge in the evening when it lights up. Drive out to Whiskeytown and get in the water. Hit the farmers market. Find your coffee place and your taco place — everyone here has strong opinions on both, and you’ll want yours.
The boxes will still be there Monday.
What I’d actually tell you
Relocating is two separate jobs. Buying the house is the one everybody plans for. Landing well is the one that determines whether you like it here by Christmas.
